What is the difference between an intern and an associate engineer?

An intern is someone who comes into the organization for a specific period of time, usually 6 months or 1 year, and gains experience in one particular area of expertise by working closely with the senior staff. They learn from experienced engineers and gain skills in their areas of interest so they can later move into full-time employment within the company. Interns work under close supervision and at times may be required to complete certain tasks before being promoted to full-time status.

An associate engineer is a term used to describe someone who has completed an undergraduate degree in engineering. They are qualified to start working as an assistant or intern. The role of an associate engineer is to assist the senior engineers with projects and give guidance and direction on how best to carry out tasks that need completing.

SpaceX recruits students from top colleges and universities all across the country. We do not exclusively recruit at any single school—instead, the most successful candidates for our intern program have a history of significant contributions to hands-on extracurricular projects in addition to having proven themselves academically. These tests will either check your oral communication skills or your programming skills – depending on which group you end up talking to – and they’ll aim at seeing how clever you are as a programmer.
